Prevent Tooth Loss with Gum Disease Treatment

Did you know that one of the main causes for tooth loss in adults is gum or ‘periodontal’ disease? Bacteria can inflame the gums and weaken the support structures of your teeth. If left untreated, this can cause bleeding and bad breath, or even the complete loss of one or more teeth in severe cases. At Union Road Dental, we’re serious about preventing and treating sore mouth and gums. That’s why we offer gum contouring and gum disease treatment for patients in order to protect and preserve their oral health.

We can determine the health of your gums and teeth and evaluate your risk for gum disease. We’ll analyse the condition of soft and hard tissues, allowing us to determine the best course of action. This may include cleaning, scaling, polishing, gum contouring or other measures. Regular brushing and flossing can help you avoid gum issues, as well as regular visits to the dentist for professional cleans. Our gum disease treatment dentist offers reliable advice that helps you maintain excellent oral health.

Brushing Tips and Suggestions

Brushing your teeth can make a big difference to the health of your gums. We offer the following tips and suggestions:

  • Brush your teeth every morning to remove plaque that has accumulated during the night, and every night before bed to protect your teeth from bacterial acids
  • Don’t brush too hard, and rinse your mouth out with water to keep the area lubricated
  • Brush for a minimum of two minutes to adequately clean your teeth. We often recommend setting a timer, but you can always brush for a little longer if you think it’s necessary
  • Avoid toothbrushes with hard bristles, as these can damage the gum tissue and leave it susceptible to the harmful effects of bacteria
  • Replace your toothbrush every three months to ensure the bristles are effective at cleaning your teeth properly. This might be necessary even sooner if you notice the bristles beginning to splay, which may indicate you’re brushing too hard

Flossing Tips and Suggestions

It’s never too late to start flossing for healthier gums. We can provide instructions on how to floss correctly, in addition to the following tips:

  • Floss at least once a day, preferably in the evening before bed
  • Don’t rush – flossing requires care and dexterity for the best results
  • Use as much floss as necessary so that all food debris has been removed
  • There are several types of floss available, so try several and choose the one that works best for you
